Demos capped an intensive weeklong Women In Technology camp hosted by Lake State that offered projects in electronics, computer simulation, webpage development, industrial robotics, and Arduino robotics. LSSU is the only university in the United States to offer an industrial robotics specialization in its undergraduate engineering and engineering technology degrees for the past 30 consecutive years.

The Engineering Society of Detroit (ESD) has given its 2017 Outstanding Leadership Award to David Roland Finley for his work as dean of business and engineering at Lake Superior State University. The citation was presented by ESD president, Douglas Patton, during the Society's annual dinner on June 21 in Plymouth, Mich. Patton is executive vice president and chief technology officer of the engineering division at Denso International America, Inc.

Lake Superior State University acting president David Roland Finley signs an agreement with Gretchen Carroll of North Central Michigan College that lets NCMC criminal justice students lever coursework towards an LSSU associate's or baccalaureate degree. The Petoskey-based college is also an LSSU regional center that offers baccalaureates in accounting, business, general studies, early childhood education and nursing.

Bay College and Lake Superior State University (LSSU) have revised a Bachelor of Science in Nursing (BSN) completion program to make it possible for students to earn a BSN in four years. The agreement better coordinates Bay College’s Associate Degree in Nursing (ADN) and general education courses with LSSU BSN courses into a four-year program. A blended-teaching approach also uses online courses so students will only have to come to Bay’s campus once a week.

Two Lake Superior State University students whose parents attended Lake State are beneficiaries of the LSSU Alumni Association’s 2017 Alumni Legacy Award. Kye Heimonen of Sault Ste. Marie, Ont., and Daphne Patten from Sault Ste. Marie, Mich., each get a $1,000 for university expenses. Both were among a dozen applicants who submitted a 250-word essay to the selection committee.

Gerome "Jerry" Kahn of Cedarbrook Trout Farm lets loose about 500 rainbow trout he trucked in on June 2 from Harrisville, Mich., to a kids' fishing pond in Sault Ste. Marie, Mich. The pond, open free to kids age 16 or younger with fishing licenses, is a joint effort between the Soo Area Sportsmen's Club, Cloverland Electric Cooperative, the Sault parks and recreation department, and Lake Superior State University's Aquatic Research Laboratory. Partially obscured and assisting Kahn from behind is LSSU fisheries major and ARL student employee Joseph Michael, from Holly, Mich. The pond sees action all season long, with the big event — the Connor Gorsuch Kids’ Fishing Day — coming on the last Saturday in July, drawing hundreds of participants competing for big fish and prizes. A child of legal age must accompany adults.

Noted artist Helga Flower stands next to Enchantment, a piece in acrylic that is one of 60 paintings on mixed media being displayed in Lake Superior State University's Arts Center Gallery in Sault Ste. Marie, Mich., through July. A native of Munich, Germany, Helga studied art in Germany, Canada, and all over the United States, She now teaches watercolor and mixed media workshops all over the United States and abroad with annual workshops in Florida and Mackinac Island. Flower maintains studios in Sault Ste. Marie, Mich., and Clewiston, Fla. The week of July 11, Flower will conduct a watercolor workshop at the LSSU Arts Center. Gallery summer hours are 12-4 p.m. Tuesday, Wednesday, and Friday; 2-6 p.m. Thursday.

Lake Superior State University alum Dan Laur ('76) pauses from fishing for Steelhead and Atlantic salmon in the St. Mary's rapids - which forms an international boundary between Michigan and Ontario - to present a check to LSSU Foundation Executive Director Tom Coates (right) and LSSU Aquatic Research Laboratory (ARL) Manager Roger Greil. Laur made the $15,000 gift on May 20 to the LSSU Center for Freshwater Research and Education (CFRE).
